A code that echoes down through history. Scotland, in the year 1214. The Scottish king is dead , the wolves gather, and an attack on the powerful Fraser Clan changes the course of history. Was it the English who have long desired to bring Scotland to heel, destroy the power of the clans, and enslave its people? Or an enemy within?

The new king is crowned at Edinburgh, but enemies surround him. Will he be strong enough to stand against England, or doomed to fail and send his kingdom and his country down a dark and dangerous path? James Fraser, known as the Fox, by the hand of fate is the new chieftain of Clan Fraser. The clans gather at Edinburgh to pledge their loyalty to the new king, but James' path has always been loyalty to his country, not to an overlord. As the other clans pledge to the young king, James pledges his loyalty where his heart lies, to Scotland, setting in motion a conflict where enemies are made, blood will flow.

Brynna, the young widow of James' brother, who is killed in an attack on the clan, wants only to return to her own family after a cruel and abusive marriage. Now the ambitions of others force her into another unwanted marriage with the new chieftain of Clan Fraser. Cruelly treated by her first husband, she becomes an unwitting pawn in the struggle for power over the clan. Strong, unbroken, she must find the courage to confront an unknown enemy, and find love with the man who has sworn to protect her.
